We are starting a new unit and here is a parent letter that describes what we will be covering in this unit.
September 14: Students used graph paper to draw a square and derive the square root of their square. We discussed perfect squares and square roots.Students found the list of perfect squares to 625 and will commit them to memory. Book P. 232 can be referenced.
Homework p.235 prob. 1-6
September 15: Students used unit cubes to construct their perfect cubes and with those as a class we discovered the 1st 5 perfect cubes.
Homework is p.235 prob. 10-12 and p. 237 prob. 24-31
September 16: Students made a double bubble thinking map to compare and contrast perfect squares and perfect cubes. Students learned to solve equations with perfect squares and cubes.
Homework is p.234 prob. 4,5,6,10 p. 235 prob. 7,8,9,13,14
Unit 1 test recovery Friday (specific questions from unit 1 can be worked to add some points to unit 1 test)
September 18: Students took a test on perfect squares and cubes and their roots. Students also were given the opportunity to work 10 Unit 1 test recovery questions for recovery points on their unit 1 test.
September 28: Determined the difference between rational and irrational numbers. Practiced changing fractions to decimals. Homework is P. 170 prob. 1-7
September 29: Took more notes on Real numbers. Started with exponents...multiplying and dividing. Homework is p. 186 prob.1,3 p.187 Prob. 4,5
September 30: Took notes on Exponent Laws: Multiplying, dividing, power to power, zero power, and negative exponents. Homework is a worksheet puzzle, but only do "x" problems on multiplication side and problems 1-8 on division side. Quiz Friday.
October 1: Worked on worksheets reviewing exponents multiplying, dividing, power to power, negative, and 0 exponents. Quiz tomorrow. Homework is to study notes on Exponent Rules and Rational and irrational numbers.
October 2: Rational and Irrational Card Sort, and MATHO game to review exponent rules. Quiz postponed until Tuesday.
October 5: Tree map on Laws of Exponents for a grade according to the given rubric and then to be used on quiz tomorrow. Study Exponent rules and rational and irrational number notes. Homework is p. 209 prob 27-34. Quiz tomorrow on exponents and rational and irrational numbers.
October 6: Took quiz on Exponents and rational and irrational numbers. No homework tonight.
October 7: Took notes on Scientific Notation. Homework is p. 216 1-6 and p.214 1-4
October 8: Book p. 220 example 1 multiplying with scientific notation. Homework finish classwork worksheets on scientific notation and multiplying scientific notation.
October 9: Work sheet on dividing with scientific notation and rational and irrational numbers for homework.
October 12: Adding and Subtracting scientific notation. Homework is p.222 4-7
October 13: All operations with scientific notation. Homework p.223 prob 8-11 PSAT Test Thursday.
October 14: Reviewed operations with scientific notation. No homework. PSAT test tomorrow. Quiz on Scientific Notation Friday.
October 15: PSAT test today. This class did not meet . Quiz on Scientific Notation tomorrow.
October 16: Took Quiz on Scientific Notation. Complete Giantburgers Task in class or for homework and p.227 Inquiry Lab complete in class or finish for homework.
Conference week next week
October 19: Finished up Giantburger Task. Introduced solving 1-step equations with rational numbers Example 1 Got It? problems. Homework is page 271 problems 2, 4, 6, and 8.
October 20: Started solving 2-step equations with rational numbers. Homework is p.281 Prob.1-6
October 21: Worked more with solving 2-step equations. Homework is p. 283 prob. 19,21,23,24
October 22: Solving equations with variables on both sides. Solutions of 1 , infinitely many, and no solutions. Homework is p.313 prob. 5-8
October 23: Continue working with solving equations with variables on both sides. Homework is p. 315 prob 19-22
October 26: Worked in class on reviewing for quiz tomorrow.
October 27: Quiz. Start reviewing for Unit 2 test which will be given Thursday and Friday.
October 28: Reviewed for Unit 2 test tomorrow and Friday. Homework is finish up review sheets for test.
October 29: Took part 1 of Unit 2 test. Homework is to study and finish making tree map or index card notes for part 2 Unit 2 test tomorrow.
October 30: Took part 2 of Unit 2 test. No homework.
November 2: Discussed SMI test to be taken Wed. Nov 4th and Thurs. Nov 5th if needed. Started Pizzazz Puzzle on Solving equations with variables on both sides to be completed for homework.
November 3: Students were given a grade recovery opportunity.
November 4: Took SMI test in computer lab
November 5: Finished taking SMI in computer lab. Worked on First in Math.
